Bluefish fishing help please.?
Well, just like the title said, I need help with bluefish fishing. I love fishing, but this is my first time fishing for blues, my recent trips being striper fishing and the occasional freshwater fishing. I need to know what the best bait would be, what pound test I shoud use, how to troll for bluefish, what lures and rigs should I use, and what extra equipment I may need. Thank you for your help!
Troll slowly, enough so your lure swims. Go against the current. 20 to 25 lb test line makes the plugs swim better..
Lures. Rapala red and white is what I find best 6″ but you can vary the colors. Just about any swimming plug will work. Bluefish are very aggressive and not very picky when feeding.
Broken back creek chub . Again red and white work best.
Large spoons work also. If you find some try to buy the ones with single hooks as opposed to the treble hooks. They can be a real pain to get out of the bluefish mouth especially while they are trashing around so be careful. I have gotten stuck a few times with treble hooks. You can change hooks on the plugs if you want to. Its easy to do.
If you are trolling for big blues use 6″ lures or larger that I mentioned above. Use at least a three foot wire leader attached to a barrel swivel at the end of your line. Buy the kind that have a snap at the end for your lure. The ones that lock. Someone in a sporting good store should help you out.
If your casting for smaller blues 5 lbs or less I like mirror lures 3 to 4 inches. Nothing beats the old Hopkins lure for casting but I am not sure if they make them any more. Again, the single hooked ones
For pier fishing any cut bait will work. Use a fish finder rig or a three way swivel. Again when you buy one ask the person how you tie it on. Its simple. Tight lines. good luck.
